Institute of Medicine Workshop Announcement

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) will be holding a workshop entitled Sex-specific Reporting of Scientific Research, to be held on Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 in Washington, DC.

The recent IOM report, Women’s Health Research:  Progress, Pitfalls and Promise, noted persistent problems of under-representation of female participants in studies ranging from animal models to clinical trials to population research, and a paucity of studies that provide sex-specific analyses. Federal regulations have helped to increase research findings on women, but have shown only partial success.

This one-day workshop, sponsored by the US National Institutes of Health, will look to other options for increasing knowledge of sex-based findings in health. It will address:  (1) the need for sex-specific reporting of scientific results, (2) potential barriers and unintended consequences of sex-specific reporting, (3) challenges and benefits experienced by journals that have implemented sex-specific requirements for publishing, and (4) steps that would facilitate the reporting of sex-specific results.

Presenters will include members of the editorial staffs from a number of leading scientific journals, as well as representatives from government agencies, non-profit organizations, and academic researchers who could both be affected by and benefit from new journal editorial policies. The agenda will allow time for comments and discussions with the audience members to help identify the potential challenges with implementing such editorial policies, and solutions to help move beyond those challenges.

For more information about this workshop and to register to attend, please go to http://www.iom.edu/Activities/Women/SexSpecificReporting.aspx. Please feel free to share this with announcement with others who might be interested in this workshop.

Editing medical journals: short course

 2-4 November 2011, Oxford, UK

Website: http://www.pspconsulting.org

The world of medical publishing is facing huge changes and journal editors are expected to ensure success in the face of increasing expectations from authors, reviewers, publishers and readers. This two-day course, now in its 15th year, looks at the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to run a successful publication – recognising that most editors are full-time scientists and clinicians and not full-time editors. The course looks at relationships that editors need to cultivate with authors, readers, reviewers and other members of the editorial team; and investigates strategies to improve efficiencies and quality. Contact: Pippa Smart, PSP Consulting, pippa.smart@gmail.com
