September 25, 2009

The Council of Science Editors' International Scholarship Program has been developed to support editors from developing nations. A number of scholarships are being offered to enable attendance at CSE's 53rd Annual Meeting, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, on 14-18 May 2010. The focus of the 2010 meeting will be "The Changing Climate of Scientific Publishing." Each funded scholar will receive free registration to the conference (including hotel stay and all meals) and partial reimbursement for travel expenses.

The scholarships are intended for candidates who live in countries on the Health InterNetwork Access to Research Initiative (HINARI) eligibility list (Band 1 [free access] or Band 2 [low-cost access]) maintained by the World Health Organization. Applicants who live in other countries are disqualified.

Decisions will be based on review of 2 short (150-word) essays, in which applicants should discuss (1) why they are interested in attending the conference and (2) how they plan to apply what they learn during the meeting. Applicants who address all points will be scored higher than those who do not. Clarity of expression and perceived enthusiasm will reflect positively on the candidate. Applicants with specific goals will be scored higher than those with vague ideas.

Applications must be received by 2 October 2009. The application must be completed on the Web site. Do not fax, e-mail, or mail the application form.

Scholarship winners will be notified in November 2009

Best of luck to all scholarship applicants, and we look forward to seeing you 14-18 May 2010 in Atlanta!

WORLD MEDICAL ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE ON HEALTH IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE

The health consequences of climate change will be highlighted at a conference in Copenhagen next month when experts join representatives of the WMA to discuss new policy.

The WMA wants to ensure that the voice of health professionals is heard when a new global climate treaty to replace the Kyoto accord is considered at the United Nations Framework Convention on climate change being held in December. Medical professionals are concerned that those creating policy on the issue of climate change do not recognize the impact that climate change will have on health throughout the world.

Next month's one-day seminar will be held on September 1 by the WMA at the Danish Engineers Building, Kalvebod Brygge, in Copenhagen.

Among the keynote speakers are:

-    Dr. Colin D. Butler, Associate Professor, National Centre for Epidemiology and Population Health, The Australian National University, Canberra, AUS

-    Ms Francesca Racioppi, Global Change and Health, WHO Regional Office for Europe

-    Dr. Ray Copes, Physician expert in environmental health, Director of Canadian National Collaborating Center for Environmental Health.

-    Ms Susan Wilburn, Technical Officer, Occupational and Environmental Health Department of Public Health and Environment, WHO

-    Dr Dong-Chun Shin, Director of the Korean Medical Association, and Dr. Paul Saoke, Vice President of the International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE Africa region), will present the perspectives of the regions of Asia and Africa.
