Copy Editing and Journal Quality
January 2, 2009 Summary: Copy editing is not free, but it is an important to ensure that articles are as free of typos and grammatical mistakes as possible.—MW
Is there any concept of copy editing between the journals among WAME on a paid basis? I suggest if it is introduced it will add in quality of the journal.

Clearly there has to be some copy editing done (unless your
authors are much more meticulous than ours!). Our publishers employ someone to
do this, but they are not medical, and so can only make fairly minor changes of
style and spelling, etc. Our reviewers do a certain amount, and then I do the
final proofing of all papers, and often find myself correcting typos, etc, that
have slipped through.
In the case of papers by non English-speaking authors, we sometimes find ourselves doing a lot of re-writing, but only if we think the paper is really good!

We have a professional journalist to copy edit every single
word that will be published. She has been working with us for more than 20
years, and she has became very knowledgeable in medical terms. Anyway, one of
the medical editors has to proof read everything after the journalist to make
sure that everything is OK. The publisher does a final review.
We might be a little compulsive about copy editing, but I feel terribly bad whenever I review something and I find a typo immortalized. Keep in mind that I am talking about Cuba, and labor cost is not an issue.

We use a "editor de estilo" who corrects Spanish
and English papers in a very strict way, and he is well received by authors. We
pay him US$300 per issue.
