Translations of WAME Policies

July 11, 2008. A member requests that WAME Publication Ethics Policies for Medical Journals be translated into multiple languages for posting on the WAME site. WAME members are encouraged to translate WAME policies and send them to WAME for posting (as a PDF).--MW

Is it possible to ask that WAME Publication Ethics Policies for Medical Journals be translated on the site to most spoken languages (French, Spanish, German )?

I understand you’re suggesting WAME develop “best practice” recommendations for translations of full journals or full articles in journals? (Not just abstracts.) To be posted on your journal’s Web site?

You’re concerned about ethics? May I ask why if it’s your own journal’s articles you’re considering posting translations of?

I and others in the association Mediterranean Editors and Translators have accumulated considerable experience on the logistics of multilingual publication of journals. Perhaps I can help if I know more.

(At the next meeting of our association in Split, Croatia in September, we’ll be including an expert panel discussion on the topic, by the way. A link to the program is posted on the WAME members’ page. We’ll be posting a definitive schedule by the end of this weekend.)

Absolutely not. I’m suggesting (if possible) that WAME, on its Web site, post translations of “WAME Publication Ethics Policies for Medical Journals” http://www.wame.org/resources/publication-ethics-policies-for-medical-journals in multiple languages.

Terribly sorry for the misunderstanding.

That’s a great idea—to have selective translation of key WAME policies—because even though English is the lingua franca, readers still struggle.

If we want editors and their support staff to really understand and read these policies it would be wonderful if they were translated.
